Clytemnestra

Mother, queen, and avenger of Mycenae

Clytemnestra was remembered as a murderous wife, monstrous queen, and warning against female rage. The story begins earlier: with a daughter led to sacrifice, a mother left behind, and a kingdom that expected grief to become obedience.

About you

You do not forget what was taken from you. You understand that grief is not always soft, and that motherhood can become a force no one survives misunderstanding.

Like Clytemnestra, you know there are losses that alter the shape of a life. You are not interested in being praised for endurance by the people who required it from you.

About Clytemnestra

Clytemnestra was queen of Mycenae, wife of Agamemnon, and mother of Iphigenia, Electra, Chrysothemis, and Orestes. In the Greek tradition, before the Trojan War could begin, Agamemnon sacrificed Iphigenia to appease Artemis and release the Greek fleet from Aulis.

The story is often told from the shore, with ships waiting and men speaking of honor, war, and necessity. From Clytemnestra’s side, it is simpler and more terrible: her daughter was killed by her husband so men could sail to Troy.

For ten years, Clytemnestra ruled Mycenae while Agamemnon fought abroad. When he returned, bringing Cassandra as a captive, Clytemnestra killed him. Greek tragedy made her a figure of horror, but even the plays cannot erase the wound beneath the act.

She is dangerous because she refuses the role allotted to bereaved women: to mourn privately, forgive publicly, and let the machinery that consumed her child continue untouched
