Inspired by ancient rings that graced the hands of Roman empresses, this is a piece to be treasured for decades and passed down through the centuries. A detailed braided solid gold band encircles the finger, holding a substantial cabochon onyx in a handcrafted bezel setting. This continuous border of gold is among the earliest known methods of securing a gemstone.
Onyx takes its name from the ancient Greek onyx, meaning fingernail or claw. Roman gem-cutters prized the stone for its layered color, carving it into intaglios and cameos before setting it into gold rings. These engraved stones were objects of beauty and private significance, but also instruments of identity: pressed into wax, a signet carried the personal mark of its wearer.
Here, the onyx is left uncarved. Its smooth, dark surface gives nothing away, held within the intricate warmth of braided gold. The form recalls an ancient signet, while the stone remains entirely personal to its wearer.

Why don't you make rings in Gold Vermeil?
While we love the affordability of vermeil, it's not an ideal metal for rings because our hands are exposed to so much wear and tear.
Vermeil necklaces can last 2 - 3 years with proper care, but we've never seen a vermeil ring last more than 6 months.
We believe it would be wrong to sell these rings to you in anything but solid gold.
