Medusa, Symbol of Protection & Feminist Icon
Ok, so Medusa isn't technically a goddess; she's kiiiind of a monster in Greek mythology. You probably know her as that evil wench with live snakes for hair which, yes, is a weird thing to wear around your neck, but hear us out.
There are varying origin stories for Medusa, but Ovid tells us that she was originally a beautiful young mortal woman. One morning in Athena's sacred temple, Poseidon, the sea god, raped Medusa. This enraged Athena, who was unable to retaliate against her fellow god. Athena instead transformed Medusa into a Gorgon - a monster with snakes for hair. By doing this, she ensured Medusa would never be defiled by a man again.
In her Gorgon form, Medusa could turn any mortal to stone with just a look. Eventually, a "hero"- Perseus - came along and chopped off her head, which was then passed around like a football between various greek gods, who used it as a weapon.
Modern day feminist, Elizabeth Johnson, says, "Medusa has since haunted Western imagination, materializing whenever male authority feels threatened by female agency." Recently, women have begun adopting Medusa as a symbol of feminine rage and power.
This piece features a delicate line drawing of Medusa with emeralds strewn through her hair, engraved in 18k gold vermeil.
Medusa has served as a symbol of protection in Greek culture for centuries, and is the perfect talisman when you need a little extra courage.
