Persephone, Goddess of Spring and the Underworld
Persephone is not just a goddess - she’s a goddess and a queen. The daughter of Zeus, King of the Gods, and Demeter, the goddess of the grain and agriculture, one day Peresphone was picking flowers one day in a field when the god and king of the Underworld, Hades, was struck by love at first sight.
As greek gods are wont to do (the ancient Greeks were seriously due for a #MeToo moment), Hades abducted Persephone and took her back to the Underworld with him. Her devastated mother, Demeter, searched the world for her daughter to no avail. Eventually, she threatened Zeus and the other gods by instigating a drought that withered the crops and deprived the world of grain. After months of human starvation, Zeus was forced to compel Hades to release his bride.
But Hades had other plans. He cunningly convinced her to eat one tiny pomegranate seed, knowing that it would force her to return to the Underworld (don’t ask why, because nobody knows - myths are weird like that). Having tasted the pomegranate, Persephone came to a new agreement with Zeus: she would spend one third of the year as Queen of the Underworld. Thus, as the springtime goddess retreated under the earth, winter came. When her four months was up, she would emerge again and the world would bloom.
This solid sterling silver medallion features a portrait of Persephone based on an ancient statue of her from the island of Crete. In her crown rests an ethical 2mm ruby, symbolizing the famous pomegranate seed that sealed her fate.
